Marcus by Goldman Sachs 2016 — 2018
Agency / Elephant Global Executive Creative Director
Moving interest from wall street to main street

Challenge
Goldman Sachs stood as the fortress of institutional finance—synonymous with exclusivity and a 150-year legacy of serving the 1%. As consumers navigated a category built on obfuscation and hidden fees, the firm's imposing authority felt alien to the personal realities of finance. In a market defined by anxiety, we recognized that facts alone couldn't build trust; we positioned Marcus not as a bank, but as a financial ally, translating legendary rigor into radical clarity to help millions gain financial agency.

Insights & Vision
While fintech challengers captivated users with frictionless interfaces and radical transparency, they lacked the proven permanence consumers crave for their life savings. Conversely, legacy institutions offered security but remained entrenched in complexity and hidden fees. We identified the opportunity to resolve this tension by creating a hybrid authority: a brand that fused the agility and consumer-centric ethos of a tech startup with the unshakeable bedrock of Goldman Sachs. The vision was to deliver the best of both worlds—institutional trust operationalized with startup speed.
Identity & System
We visualized this union by marrying the approachable vitality of fintech with the visual vernacular of the establishment. We revitalized the classic stipple-cut technique—a homage to financial history—transforming it into a dynamic 3D motion language that bridges the gap between legacy and innovation. This tension extends to the identity system: a stark, high-contrast palette of electric mint and monochromatic slate cuts through the category’s sea of traditional blue, while a precise, humanistic typeface prioritizes radical legibility to signal the end of the "fine print" era.

Savings, Loan & FinEd Product
We designed and built Marcus’s savings, loan, and financial education products as one coherent system. Friction-heavy tasks collapsed to milliseconds through clean flows, clear language, and smart automation—turning everyday check-ins into small moments of delight. Guidance, simulators, and editorial content translated finance into action, helping people make better decisions and build healthier habits.

Data Visualization System
We treated data visualization as FinTech’s native language—turning complexity into obvious, trustworthy signals. We built a pattern library that maps user intent to the right chart, state, and interaction, with clear hierarchy, accessible color, and time-aware motion. The result is consistent, situation-appropriate visuals across products that help people see, understand, and act on their finances.

Marketing & Advertising
We built a multi-campaign program that turned financial friction into clarity. We produced hundreds of assets across paid social, OLV, TV, direct mail, print, and CRM—destigmatizing credit card debt, unpacking antiquated bank fees, and making savings interest rates obvious and motivating. Using product-led storytelling, simple metaphors, and measurable calls to action, the work shifted perception and drove adoption.

Business Impact
Over 18 months I led Marcus end to end: built the brand, designed and shipped the savings and loan products, and stood up a full communications engine. I managed a 45-person team embedded at Goldman Sachs and established tight operating routines with risk, compliance, legal, and engineering. We delivered a coherent, regulatory-grade experience and an always-on marketing system that enabled a nationally visible launch. The work set the platform for ongoing product expansion and acquisition.
